The Face Behind the Face

We wear a smile beneath the light,

And hide our storms away from sight.

We learn to laugh when hearts are torn,

And greet the world as though reborn.

We build our faces out of lies,

To fit the world and its disguise.

We change our colors, day by day,

So no one sees what fades away.

But in the mirror, late at night,

A stranger stands beneath the light.

He knows the dreams we left behind,

The silent wars within our mind.

No crowd can hear the soul's complaint,

No perfect smile can hide the faint.

For underneath the masks we wear,

Lives someone longing to be bare.

Perhaps the bravest thing to do

Is not to seem, but to be true.

To lose the world that loved the show,

And find the self we used to know.
